The Promised Child by Avner Gold

My mom and my sister, Leelah, have been trying to get me to read this book for years.....don't know what took me so long, it's a great book! It takes place in Poland during the 1600's where there is a Rabbi and his wife who are unable to have a child. They go to a very famous Rabbi in Krakow who says that they'll have a baby, but there are three conditions: they have to bring their son back to him on his third birthday, the baby will be born with a defect, and, on every Yom Kippur, the father will have to daven Kol Nidrei for the entire community. The Rabbi and his wife agree to these conditions and had a son that was born with a missing middle toe. Unfortunately, as the couple brought their son to visit the Rabbi on his third birthday, he was kidnapped by Cossaks. Read this book if you want to find out how the three conditions ultimately save the Jewish community in Poland.
